One Drop of Humanity: Why accuracy matters in every donation

Current as of 2026

In connection with World Blood Donor Day in June, the world comes together to celebrate a global tribute to the millions of voluntary, unpaid blood donors whose generosity saves lives every day.

But every donation also begins with a decision. A decision that must be made with confidence, both to protect the donor and to ensure safe blood for patients in need.

Trust begins with accuracy

In blood bank settings, hemoglobin screening is one of the first and most critical steps, as it determines whether an individual can safely donate, and whether that donation will contribute to a safe and reliable blood supply.

If a donor is not suitable to donate because they do not meet hemoglobin requirements, they may be deferred. This helps protect the donor’s health while ensuring safe blood for patients in need.

However, donor rejection can be discouraging for individuals who arrive ready to help, and repeated deferrals may reduce the likelihood that they return to donate in the future.

For blood banks, unnecessary or uncertain rejections can also create operational strain by limiting available donors and making it harder to maintain a stable blood supply.

Accurate hemoglobin results enable blood banks to screen donors with confidence, support compliance, and maintain a safe and stable blood supply.

At HemoCue, we believe that reliability at the point of care is fundamental for safe decision-making. With decades of experience in hemoglobin measurement, our solutions are designed to deliver accurate, reliable Hb screening wherever decisions are made, whether in a hospital, a blood bank or a mobile blood drive.

Because in those moments, there is no room for uncertainty.

Blood banks around the world rely on point-of-care Hb testing not only for speed and convenience, but because it enables consistent hemoglobin results using a standardized testing method and supports professional screening practices.

One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.

This year’s World Blood Donor Day campaign, “One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.”, reminds us that every donation carries meaning far beyond the moment itself.

But ensuring a safe and sustainable blood supply requires more than technology alone.

While progress has been made in blood safety in many countries, access to safe blood remains uneven, particularly in low- and middle-income regions.

To help close this gap, a more holistic approach is needed, one built on a careful balance between:

  • Awareness: so that more people understand that their donations can save lives
  • Systems and infrastructure: supported through consistent screening practices that enable safe and efficient collection across sites
  • Trust: strengthened through accurate testing that donors, healthcare professionals, and patients can depend on

HemoCue is committed to helping make every donation decision count, by enabling confidence through accurate hemoglobin results for patients worldwide. Even one drop of humanity deserves accuracy.

Because when we can rely on the result, we can focus on what matters most:
helping every donation deliver safe, meaningful impact.
