WeMind Psychiatric Clinic in Nacka, Sweden

WeMind is a Swedish mental healthcare provider, established in 2006. In the past few years, WeMind has grown to be the largest private provider within psychiatry, with clinics in Stockholm, Göteborg and the Skåne region. In Nacka, there is a specialized clinic for adult patients who need psychiatric assessment, investigation, and treatment.

Valeria Grevsten, Senior Physician in the team for psychotic disorders at WeMind in Nacka, has been with the company since 2013. With the overall responsibility for the healthcare setup of psychotic disorders within the southeast area of Stockholm (incl. clinics in Nacka, Värmdö, Tyresö, Haninge and Nynäshamn), Dr Grevsten initiated the implementation of HemoCue® WBC DIFF System.

Why did the clinic choose HemoCue® WBC DIFF System?

Dr Grevsten heard about HemoCue® WBC DIFF System from a colleague and could see great benefits with having a point-of-care system for measuring white blood cells and neutrophils. Patients receiving treatment with clozapine are subjected to regular mandatory blood monitoring of white blood cells, incl. neutrophils. Before having access to point-of-care measurements, the blood monitoring process had to be done in the laboratory, either by having the patient come to the lab or by sending venous samples. Results became available in the patient journal a few hours later, whereupon the physicians could decide whether clozapine treatment should be initiated or dis-/continued.

When is the HemoCue® WBC DIFF System used?

The clinic in Nacka has just over 300 patients with schizophrenia, of which 43 (14%) currently receive treatment with clozapine. Because 25-30% of all schizophrenic patients are treatment resistant, hence subject for treatment with clozapine, the actual levels of clozapine prescriptions in Nacka reflect a widespread underuse.

This underuse is also seen in other areas of Stockholm, nationally and internationally, and mandatory blood monitoring has been identified as one of the major reasons.

“An important aspect is the possibility to act immediately if results are abnormal, without the delay of having to wait for results to get back from the lab.”

What are the benefits of using HemoCue® WBC DIFF System?

Since HemoCue® WBC DIFF System was implemented in practice, Dr Grevsten has felt more comfortable with prescribing clozapine. According to her experience, more patients now adhere to the simplified blood monitoring process. The improved workflow, with results in just 5 minutes, enables quicker decision-making about clozapine treatment.

An important aspect is the possibility to act immediately if results are abnormal, without the delay of having to wait for results to get back from the lab. Since many patients are needle adverse, the possibility to use capillary sampling, which can be experienced as less invasive, is highly appreciated.

By removing situations that can feel overwhelming for patients, such as catching appointments at the lab or having to wait for results, many patients feel less stressed.

Furthermore, having a clinician who is familiar with the patient conduct the test, creates a safe environment for the patient.
